With a long tradition in the production of classics scholars, Lerpoolians will be delighted to learn that the study of the Ancient World and its languages are far from dead at the modern College. Latin and Classical Civilisation are taught throughout the Secondary phase and are options at both GCSE and A level, and the Prep school hosts a popular Latin Club. Increasingly students are continuing to University to pursue Classical subjects. Of course, the Latin Oration at Speech Night is still going strong, the school song and the Latin Grace make regular appearances and the College puts on periodic Greek plays in translation.
Also, through the School Direct scheme, Liverpool College is now the leading provider of trained Secondary Classics & Latin Teachers outside London and the SE: four teachers this year, all with jobs, and another five ready to start in the new year. Those who apply to us, often put us as the first choice above Cambridge University and King's College London, the two main providers of PGCE Classics/Latin teachers, because of the top-quality, personalised programme we deliver.
In 2016 the College started working with the Charity Classics for All, who champion the introduction of Classical subjects to state schools. The Liverpool Classics Hub is based in the College and leads Classics for All North, which represents the charity’s northern networks (Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds Blackpool, Durham). Together we work to develop a strong regional presence for Classics.
The Liverpool College Classics Network aims to promote and support the teaching and learning of classical subjects in state schools across Merseyside and surrounding areas through offering free training and Continuing Professional Development for teachers in schools interested in introducing classics.
Achievements to date include:
· introducing Latin to 14 local primary schools, 1 local prep school.
· training 63 primary teachers to deliver Latin.
· delivering an annual primary Latin module for PGCE students at Hope University, attended
by 54 students over 3 years.
· supporting two local secondary schools to introduce Latin and ancient history at Key
Stage 3
· Working with two additional secondary schools to introduce Classical Civilisation
· running an ancient Greek academy with the University of Liverpool, which teaches 35
students from across the city every year from beginners to A level.
· Arranging regular CPD and training for regional teachers
· Hosting student events such as Classics taster session, Primary Roman days, 6th form
conferences, and Latin competitions.
· Organising a series of free public lectures on Classical subjects
We carry out our work with the support of Liverpool College, Liverpool University and Classics for All, but uniquely we have also developed an Independent State School Partnership in the North West for Classics. Chaired by the Liverpool Classics Hub, this brings together Classics teachers from across the region (Stockport to Lancaster, Liverpool to Bolton), from Independent schools, Comprehensives, Grammar schools, Academies and 6th form Colleges, to run events and training and encourage teachers and students to celebrate their love of all things Classical. Several Old Lerpoolians, now teaching in other schools and at Oxford University, work with us regularly to develop this programme.
Just before Lockdown Liverpool College was due to open a new Classics Library in Godwyn House, to be named the Douglas Cashin Library. When the opening is rescheduled, hopefully, there will be plenty of OL’s with fond memories of their Classical education.
Anyone wishing to find out more about the Liverpool Classics Hub should check out our website www.classicsforallnorth.org.uk or email the Coordinator, Alice Case at info@liverpoolclassicshub.co.uk We’d love to hear from anyone from the College who still loves Classics!
