"If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know." Louis Armstrong

Barrie Youde (Selwyns, 1959) gives his thoughts on this recent event.

Please give my warmest congratulations, thanks, and best wishes to all of Liverpool College Jazz Club for their splendid entertainment this evening!

I was with Ian Hamilton-Burke, Chris Lunt and Jeremy Lowe. I remember thinking how much Anthony Tyler (he of Tylerius, and later as Editor of the New Musical Express) would have enjoyed it all.

It was a delight to see and hear such a voluminous cornucopia of youthful talent. I joined the school immediately after Easter 1954 and the thought now occurs that, since that date 71 years ago, I had not ever spent any more enjoyable two-and-a-half hours on the school premises than were allowed this evening.

The singers and the musicians were all hugely entertaining; and, of any errors, it was difficult to detect which were accidental and which were very carefully rehearsed. Here is budding professionalism at its best.

Well done indeed!
