Review of Event |
Founders' Day may no longer occur on the nearest Friday to the 22nd of October, but even so, this year's event was well attended, with seating occupied well behind where "the bridge" traverses the nave.
Most of those who had signed up on The Lerpoolians Event Page were well catered for, with reserved seating at the front—the best seats in the house! Amongst the guests were two of three alumni from Liverpool Collegiate, distinctive in their Collegiate Old Boys' Association ties.
While the format was the same in years gone by, this year, two new (to Founders' Day attendees) hymns were sung. Also, a relatively new feature now comes after the Commemoration of Founders and Benefactors. While the orchestra played 'Flourish for Wind Band' by Ralph Vaughan Williams, pupils from the Primary and Secondary phases presented emblems of their Houses.
The sermon was by Lerpoolian the Very Reverend Sean Patrick Riley MA STL (Butlers, 1999), Chancellor, Archdiocese of Liverpool.
Possibly the highlight of the service was when the Chamber choir moved from the choir stalls to directly underneath the great tower (the Scott memorial) and sang a cappella ‘Ubi Caritas’

Other Lerpoolians just couldn't wait. Arriving from midday at The Philharmonic Dining Rooms (pub), the numbers waxed and waned over the course of the next five hours. Numbers were hard to gauge, but this year was a record, with between 25 and 30 calling in at some point during the afternoon for a "pie and a pint." Many came on from the Founders' Day Service. We also received apologies from three other Lerpoolians who couldn't attend on the day.
If the Founders' Day service isn't for you, then you are most welcome to come along to this informal gathering, which we call Last of the Summer Wine. We meet three times a year: once around March, the second time around June, and the third meeting is always on Founders' Day (whatever day is fixed for that each year by the College).
The meetings of Last of the Summer Wine and Founders' Day are published on The Lerpoolians website under the "Events" tab, and emails are sent to our members promoting them.
