Report on the London Dinner, 2023

Intrepid Lerpoolians met once again for their annual dinner, despite rail strikes foiling some regulars from attending.

Covid restrictions seem to be the only way to prevent The Lerpoolians' London dinner not happening, so a mere national rail strike just didn't have the "clout" to stop this year's celebrations.

Admittedly numbers attending were less than usual, with those travelling from further afield and especially from Liverpool particularly hard hit by the strikes. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained, and with some deft planning, we had a good turnout.

Table Plan

We moved into a smaller suite which beautifully matched the evening, With a mobile bar in the middle area, to one side was the dining room and the other a relaxing lounge.

As President, Iain Blair (Butlers, 1978) was in charge of the evening. A warm welcome was given to Andy Fox (retired staff, 2022), who regaled the audience with some humorous tales (often against himself) gathered over the 33 years he worked at Liverpool College.

Our Principal wasn't able to attend this year, so we were delighted for Sarah Doran to stand in for Hans Broekman. Sarah presented a "whistle-stop" overview of the more than 300 events she has organised in 2022 for the Gifted & Talented programme run for the Wilton Scholars. Beforehand Nigel Moss (Selwyns, 1979) gave a short speech about our illustrious alum, T.R. Wilton, whose legacy now provides the funding for this programme. You can read more about T.R. Wilton here.

The menu consisted of

Baked goats’ cheese encased in pistachio nuts served with quince and pear chutney

Roast breast of chicken, mushroom, asparagus and tarragon velouté sauce served with new potatoes & french beans

Vegetarian alternative: Aubergine & courgette parmigiana with Oakwood cheese Mornay & Neapolitan sauce, panzanella salad

Bramley apple & blackberry nut crumble served with calvados custard

Coffee & petits fours

A prize of a bottle of champagne was awarded for the best attended year. This time it was a joint win for 1970 and 1981.

The "Survivors' Photo" records the end of the evening at 1:30 am. Very responsible! But could it have been because the Bar closed early this year?

Join us next year to make the evening go with a real swing!
