It is with regret we report the death of Capt. Grenville P Johnson, MBE, RN on 28 April 2026 at the age of 71. He had been suffering from a debilitating cancer for the past couple of years but remained stoic throughout and his end was peaceful, surrounded by family.
Grenville was at Liverpool College1962-1972, starting boarding at a young age while still in David House, his parents being posted in Qatar. Through Mossley Vale and School House, he was a popular and energetic schoolboy, and an outstanding swimmer, appointed Captain of School Swimming and winning the Victor Ludorum in 1971. He was active in the Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh Award and went on from the CCF Naval Section to join the Royal Navy on leaving school.
He qualified first as a submariner and then moved into diving and mine clearance. He rose to command the minehunter HMS INVERNESS and served in the Falklands in 1983. in 1984, he was the CO of HMS BOSSINGTON in the Gulf of Suez, for which he was appointed an MBE in the 1985 Queen's Birthday Honours. His later assignments included Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, UAE and after retirement from The Royal Navy he worked for the UAE Armed Forces in Abu Dhabi, where he also played a leading role in promoting local rugby for adults and children.
