St Peter's Chapel was consecrated in 1934 and since then has played a central part in daily life at Liverpool College. As thoughts turn to its upcoming centenary, one can see that there will need to be an investment in the fabric of the building to restore it for the demands put upon it now and in the coming years.
During the last 90 years or so, the organ, as part of the chapel, has passed through various configurations. Up to the early 1970s, the pipes of the organ (built by the Liverpool firm of Rushworth and Dreaper) were located at the rear of the balcony on either side of the window, with the console placed adjacent to the window.
Today's organ
The current electronic organ in the Chapel of St Peter came to us a few years ago through a kind donation from the Pilling Trust. Originally built by Makin Organs, this three manual and pedal instrument is used daily for worship, accompanying each year group throughout the College.
The innards are circuitry and sound cards rather than wind, action and pipes that would be involved with a real pipe organ. This saves on the large costs of annual tuning and maintenance, but nevertheless, the organ is due some "tender loving care", which cannot wait for the upcoming structural renovations to the building itself. Various parts of the electronics are starting to fail. Some of the combination pistons have stopped working, and some of the voices of the organ are starting to lose their clear sound.
We are delighted to launch a fund to help with the repairs and maintenance of the organ with this Organ Extravaganza.
The event is FREE to attend, and seats are limited to a maximum of 150. Instead of charging for tickets, please consider making a donation to the fund. There are several ways you can help finance this fund.
